This watercolor is one that I bravely or foolishly continued to work on. Sometimes when you start to like a painting, there is a moment where you stop early, continue bravely, and possibly go too far. With modern photographic equipment it is possible to save the work midway. The darker version is the final painting.
As far as what the image says, I would prefer to leave to the viewer to decide. Hopefully, they don’t see it as a self-reference for how the painting ended up.
